We have been keeping a blog since 2008. It is a chronological listing of many topics related to Wood that Works. You will find information about sculptures, inspirations, other artists, day to day life in the shop. The topics are many and fascinating.  If you are an avid follower of David's work we encourage you to subscribe to this blog to receive the regular updates.

Falling Water on WoodThatWorks.com

I've added Falling Water to my website. It included the same basic information that I've talked about here but adds the flash animation that I used when I designed the sculpture.

Falling Water

The first thing I did when I knew the sale of Seascape was going through was to start work on a replacement. It's taken several months but this week I installed Falling Water. This is an ambitious piece with 5 independent patterning wheels and 3 drive springs. It runs for about 21 hours per winding. The sound it makes is a pleasantly random soft clicking that you only hear if you listen for it.

Marji came up with the name shortly after seeing the first animation test. We both knew it was right as soon as she said it.

The wall the sculpture is mounted on is 14 feet high. My shop has only 10 foot ceilings. I had to mount the sculpture sideways to set it up and get it going. I spent a lot of time with my head twisted sideways trying to get an idea of how it would look vertical!

This is my largest and most complex sculpture to date. I wasn't sure if it would work as planned. In the end it took a few days of tweaking to get it to work reliably but that is one of my favorite parts of designing. It is when the sculpture teaches me!

Seascape moves to Dansko

I installed Seascape at the new Dansko corporate headquarters and retail outlet in West Grove, PA. in July. They were looking for a large one-of-a-kind sculpture for a protected area in the retail portion of their beautiful new building. The only sculpture I had that was nearly large enough was Seascape.

The installation went smoothly except for one minor glitch, I forgot to pack one knob. I had extras of everything else but no extra knobs. Marji and I had to drive to our daughter's house (about an hour away), steal a knob from her sculpture and drive back to Dansko. Fortunately it was a drive over pretty back roads. We used a GPS and explored several different routes. We stumbled on a Simon Pierce store and had a delightful lunch.

I like how the sculpture looks. I was afraid it might be too small but it fills the space nicely. The facility is beautiful with an open airy feel, many intriguing spaces and art pieces. It's worth a stop just to see the building and all the artwork.

The Radiance edition is coming to a close.

There are 4 sculptures left in the Radiance edition. I'll be making them this August. Three are sold. The last one is still available.

Design Month at Wood That Works

July is a "design month". I don't schedule any production and it feels like vacation! I use the time to read, swim, and, if there's time, work on some new ideas and finish up some old ones. The swimming has been great, I have a good book and I'm making progress with some designs. I finished a new sculpture Variation Dream and have a new piece with a working name of Pinwheel up and running. Three other new designs are partially done. They all use variations of a new mechanism I'm working on that isn't quite right yet. This mechanism has potential but will take more time and study to get right. So far it is too complex for the user to set up and not reliable enough.

August is just about here and it is back to work. I'm making Sky Dance in August, working on a replacement design for Seascape and plugging away at the stubborn new mechanism.
